Is this a political protest piece? I am really not quite sure! It began with the cherries, and the border of an African wax print fabric became the bowl. But when the background pieces added their own texture, it just did not yet feel complete. There were a couple of brown scraps in my stash that I had with me, and they became the two rats taking an interest in the bright red fruit, and that made the picture complete.
Can we hypothesize that the bowl of cherries represents Life? Then the rats are those elements which get in to spoil the best things that life offers, not necessarily out of malice, but solely to satisfy their own appetites. It did elicit from my husband the suggestion to give one of the rats an orange comb-over!
