I have been knitting since forever, and made a hat from a pattern many years ago, which was essentially a 5" wide strip about 22" long, with the top part added in. I have since realized that this process could incorporate any cable pattern or patterns that would fit that width.
No two hats are ever alike. I use different colors, cable patterns (or make up my own) and finish off with a top variation of my own inventing. Tell me the colors you'd like, and maybe a cable pattern (cables add warmth, and I love doing them) and you can have your warm custom-made hat! Variegated yarn adds its own charm, paired with a solid color that matches or complements it, and all the lovely and quirky new novelty yarns can add their own spice, especially if used sparingly.
