The Tolkien caricature was from a T-shirt given to my husband Curt years ago by an
old college friend, and worn regularly over a number of summers until holes began
to appear in its back. I could not just discard it, so I mounted it and used some
fabric paint for flesh color, painted the pipe and staff, and uncoiled some cord
for whispy white fibers. I had made a futon cover for our new sunroom, and used
scraps from that for the frame; it was Curt's idea to add one more piece to emanate
from the pipe! This picture is not framed, but mounted on thick cardboard so it
appears to stand out a bit from the wall. The one addition I needed to make to the
picture itself was the eye peering out; originally it was drawn simply as a squint.
