Description
I began this piece by making a collage of upholstery remnants, and it looked okay, but not great. It was low contrast, not particularly interesting in itself, and I almost tossed it away until it came to me that this is merely a background, it is a wall and needs something bright, so a red-orange piece stepped up to become a vase, and green pieces became stems and leaves, and on top of that, a bright range of yellow, red and orange fabrics became tulips, And then, a greenish wood grain fabric became the table – and also replaced the green stems I had made at first. Finally, as I often do, I decided the shape of the entire piece should echo the shape of the vase.
This is all underlaid with a thick batting, and my final stage of hand-sewing the fabric to a foam core back brings out what does not really show so well in a flat photo; the vase and flowers are like a bas relief sculpture, giving dimension to the entirety.
